“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time” – Thomas Merton.
The freedom to make anything I can imagine is the driving force of my painting. Painting gives ways to discover more about myself and avenues of expressing my feelings. My painting process starts with modeling paste to add texture then I start adding paint. I squeeze paint right from the tube onto the canvas, letting the process guide me. My favorite step of my painting process is utilizing palette knives; I use a variety of sizes and shaped palette knives to mix and drag the paint around the canvas, leading to a very textural and tactile experience. I play around with the paint to try to get the colors to interact in interesting, dynamic ways. The process is very fluid as I use this step to examine the composition of the work and add more paint as seen fit. I sometimes experiment with expectations of a painting by leaving sections of the canvas showing through the paint or by leaving a section exposed. I have started adding glazes, so the canvas is not always white. My visual language is consistent with each of my paintings, while the colors vary through my practice, I utilize more naturalistic colors like blues and greens. I am currently trying to deviate from that consistency and branch off into using different colors to push my practice. For example, in my painting Rose I wanted to stray away from blue, so I chose to paint with pink and green. This branching out into non-natural colors first began on a small canvas as a test and I absolutely loved the process. My favorite qualities within my practice is when other colors are visible past the primary color of the composition, creating an interesting dialog between the colors.
Two of my favorite artist’s are Jackson Pollack and Jason Anderson, although both artists' styles are very different from mine. I love the expressionistic way they paint as well as their use of abstraction. This series of paintings have given me a new perspective on how to utilize abstraction in my practice, quickly becoming a dominating force. I have always had an appreciation for paintings with depth and texture within the application of the paint so to explore those techniques has opened my practice to depth I did not know was capable. I will create more textured paintings as my practice progresses and I will have my works become larger in scale and depth.
